I am writing this letter to thank you and to let you know how we are using Spinoza in our class. Shortly after receiving Spinoza on loan, we received a new student in class. I teach a handicap/life-skills unit on an elementary campus. The student was a very young autistic child. He was apprehensive about joining our group. I brought out Spinoza with the “ I’m Your Friend” tape, turned him on and our young student took to him and left his Mother’s side.

He also takes a nap with Spinoza, which has helped keep him quiet during rest time. We have an older student that gets agitated easily if his routine schedule is interrupted. Spinoza helps to soothe and calm him down. The soft music and calming voice really seem to minister to my students. Spinoza is not just for the younger students, I have a 15 year old student who loves to sit and rock Spinoza while listening to music. There are days she just seems down or tired and Spinoza helps to cheer her up.

I wanted to drop you a quick letter in regards to the Spinoza Bear, which has been wonderful to have in many of our homes. Over the many years that I have worked with people with various disabilities, I have seen a lot of “fads” come and go. There has been this intervention, and that technique introduced, and over a short period of time some of them are a part of the past. We have been using the Spinoza Bear for years and it continues to have the same soothing affect, week after week, month after month, and now year after year.

Combining the feeling, sight and sound senses that Spinoza offers, it is very appealing for our residents that live in our homes. We have one resident who uses the Spinoza Bear as he falls asleep every night and another resident who enjoys the Spinoza book read to her any time. One of our residents, who past away about a year ago, died with Spinoza in her arms. The Spinoza Bear and tapes were sent to her Mother in memory of her daughter along with the pictures of Spinoza and her with smiles in every one. I would recommend the Spinoza Bear and book to be used in many different situations for group homes and nursing homes.
