More than just a teddy bear, Spinoza provides sensory stimulation, companionship, hope, and happiness through specialized audio cassettes played in a high quality cassette tape player and speaker hidden deep in his fur. He plays his collection of nine audio cassette tapes or any standard cassette tape. Spinoza's tapes carry messages of self-esteem, encouragement, relaxation, stress management, and coping with grief and loss. Family members and friends of residents can record their own tapes with stories, cherished memories, or favorite music to be played in Spinoza.

Spinoza is used in almost every department of the facility including social services, activities, physical and occupational therapy, and by nurses, chaplains, and volunteers. Spinoza passes infection control standards. He can be gas sterilized, surface washed with antibacterial soap or germicidal wipes.( Please refer to your facility's regulations for sterilization procedures.) 

Many hospitals place gowns or T-shirts on Spinoza (children's size 2-4) to exchange between residents. Spinoza may be placed on a nightstand near the resident where his tapes can still be heard and provide comfort. We recommend using two pairs of rechargeable batteries so you can place one set in the charger while the other is being used in the bear.

Our list of special individual 1-1 visits was increasing, and time was becoming a big factor in our Activity program. This has been very beneficial in leaving Spinoza with a resident to listen to. 

We've been able to ask some residents if they would like to listen to Spinoza and we then visit briefly and  leave the Bear and allow time to get an evaluation when the tape has finished. Some have drifted off to sleep with the soothing voice and music. Others have communicated and started talking, with the presence of the Bear.

With some residents becoming agitated for various reasons, this is a Godsend. It not only has proven to be calming and effective for the resident themselves, but also for others coming into the facility and visiting with residents. When someone is upset or yelling for many reasons or some unknown, it can be very disturbing for some that don't understand. Even other residents in the facility become distracted and upset. (Spinoza) can help make the atmosphere a lot more pleasant and it has truly worked for us.

I have seen my father extremely agitated and have been amazed at how calm he will get when the tape is turned on.  He also loves to hold Spinoza and sometimes just closes his eyes and falls asleep holding his bear.  I say 'his bear' because when I saw his reaction to the activity director's bear, I knew I had found the perfect Father's Day gift for my father.  It has been very difficult to find anything that my father would respond to...but with Spinoza I have seen the 'twinkle' come back in my father's eyes!
