Nobody looks forward to having stitches, getting a shot, having tests run, going to an emergency room, or having surgery. Spinoza…the Bear Who Speaks from the Heart, makes these experiences a little easier for patients and their loved ones.

For doctors, nurses, child life specialists, and therapists, Spinoza is much more than a teddy bear who begs to be hugged. He is an effective therapeutic tool when used with his collection of nine audio tapes which help to calm patients down and lessen anxiety and fear. Deep breathing exercises help with pain control and relaxation.

Some doctors and nurses choose to create their own tapes to play in Spinoza explaining medical procedures in a non-threatening way so patients know what to expect.

Spinoza passes infection control standards. He can be surface washed with antibacterial soap or germicidal wipes or gas sterilized if necessary. Many hospitals and clinics dress the bear in gowns or T-shirts which can be washed. Or place Spinoza on a table or nightstand where he can still be heard and provide comfort to the patient.

spinoza bear video Thank you for introducing me to Spinoza. He is charming! The day Spinoza arrived, I had no pediatric patients, and several of my adult patients were in need of special comfort. I introduced Spinoza to each patient by explaining this was something new we would be doing with our pediatric patients, and would she mind in giving me her opinion. I showed her how Spinoza worked and left him at the bedside.

One young woman, in her mid 20’s, was in tears, she was so frightened. I looked in on her later and she was sleeping with Spinoza cuddled beside her. Another patient, a woman in her late 60’s, had come to me quite agitated and anxious. I spent some time with her and left Spinoza on her bed. When I checked back, she was looking at Spinoza smiling. Spinoza’s ability to calm and comfort even the adult patients has been clearly demonstrated for me that first day. We are looking forward to Spinoza joining our staff at our Out Patient Surgery Center.

"Spinoza has been an invaluable therapeutic and diversional intervention with Loyola University of Chicago Medical Center’s pediatric patients. Particularly when utilized with our growing pediatric hematology/oncology patients, Spinoza has provided comfort and security during the often stressful and frightening experience of hospitalization and throughout the initial days following diagnosis. Spinoza further provides each patient with opportunities to recognize and understand their feelings.

With therapeutic cassettes such as “ Do You Wonder?” and “Dream on the Water”, patients are encouraged to utilize creativity and imagination, which, in turn, stimulates their emotional health and well-being. Self esteem and positive self concepts are fostered within many of the tapes, which provide additional avenues for inner strength and coping skills. Thus, we in the Child Life Program believe Spinoza’s valuable abilities would continue to enhance each patient’s quality of life, even subsequent to discharge from Loyola."
