Caring hospice providers and volunteers create and environment where those who are dying can live out their lives with as much comfort and dignity as possible and where they and their families and friends can say good bye. Spinoza has a special role to play in helping people experience as much joy in their lives as they can and is also a great comfort to patients, their families, and their loved ones.
Spinoza can be used by all members of hospice teams to aid in efforts to comfort and care for patients and loved ones. He may be used with both young and old people in one-to-one situations or with support groups. There are as many uses and possibilities for Spinoza as there are caring, helping professionals and the people who need him.

| Spinoza Makes a Difference... |
Grandpa was diagnosed with terminal cancer and very concerned about the loss he would create for his two grandchildren who lived close by. Our social worker introduced the Spinoza Bear
to the family. Upon the next visit she found grandpa in his big recliner with a grandchild on each knee all three of them listening to Spinoza together. He was feeling better knowing they were beginning to understand love and loss before they would have to experience it and the children were learning about loss in the arms of their grandpa.
Our program is growing and so is our Spinoza family
.Thank you.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Lauer, Provider Relation

| We purchased Spinoza in June of this year. Since then I have used him in two of my group sessions. The response to him has been very open and loving. I see a warm glow come to their faces, one that dispels fear of the unknown. One testimonial from the summer participants wrote, I especially enjoyed Spinoza. He was one of the best parts of the group.
I introduce Spinoza in my group sessions by saying that sometimes we often relate to animals that are non-threatening, when we are hurting, easier than people. That is why Spinoza can be such comfort. You can hold him, he sings to you, and listens. He gives no unwanted advice or criticism. He offers unconditional love. Also, during the grief process, there is an empty feeling around the heart and chest. Holding Spinoza close helps to fill that space and bring a warm and fuzzy feeling to you. One tells you that you are not alone.

I have seen first hand the wonderful solace and friendship that Spinoza offers children facing life limiting disorders at Canuck Place, BC Childrens Hospital and up at our camps. But I think my fondest memory of Spinoza was a mother who had just lost her 14 year old daughter to cancer and for two days could not really bring herself to talk or grieve with any of the staff at Canuck Place.
Late the second night I came out of my office
to find this mother on the couch outside the family suite, clinging to Spinoza and crying as Spinoza spoke and sang to her.

The Spinoza Bear we have here at Hospice of Houston County has proven invaluable! Children in our grief support group, who have lost a loved one to a terminal illness, hug and love him whenever they visit the office. Others who are actively in the dying process themselves keep Spinoza close at hand to entertain them during their long, painful journey. He is a wonderful addition to our Hospice Team!
Gratefully,
Ginny Bell, LMFT Family Therapist

It is so rewarding to watch a child run into a room, pick up Spinoza, sit down, place the bear on his lap and hug him while rocking back and forth to the words and songs of Spinoza. This same child hesitantly walked into the group the first day and sat in an almost fetal-like position the entire session.
The facilitator of this group has made Spinoza the core of her Rainbow Program (a support group for children who have lost a loved-one). He has brought comfort and peace to our little ones. This was indeed one of the most valuable gifts to be given to our program.

For thousands of terminally ill children, their final days are spent alone, feeling scared and unloved. Through sharing with Spinoza, the children will feel his love and understanding, better enabling them to live the last days of their lives feeling the love and warmth of their families, friends, caregivers.
Spinoza is able to help the children to open up to the love around them in a way that no one else can. Childrens Hospice International is convinced that Spinoza is necessary in meeting the needs of our special children and their families. Spinoza can truly help us all realize the importance of life and living.
